The national leader of All Progressives Congress, (APC) Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is in a fix over the best form or arrangement for the party’s flag bearers for the 2015 general election to emerge sources inside his Bourdillon home in Ikoyi has revealed to National Weekender.
According to our investigations Tinubu is caught in between the choice of handpicking candidates and creating an enabling democratic process and environment whereby candidates will emerge through voting process by going through party’s primary election. Already the party (APC) is having issues in some states like Ekiti where Tinubu has stood behind the incumbent governor Kayode Fayemi thus leading to the defecting of Hon. Opeyemi Bamidele a member of the House of Representatives who served under Tinubu’s administartion as Lagos Governor. Bamidele and his teeming supporters have moved to the Labour Party thus further creating a crack in the APC which is less than six months old.
This situation has not augured well with party chieftains especially the governors who joined the party from the PDP who are insisting that electing of party officers and flag bearers for the 2015 election should be the best form to select candidates. This arguemnt on the other hand is not impressive to Tinubu who feels that such process will rock the boat and create division in the leadership structure.
In the light of this, the Jagaban of Kogi has been meeting and reaching out to party chieftains with a view to convince them to accept his plan of handpicking which in the first place led to the emergence of all five incumbent governors of the APC contolled South West states. Our soucre revealed that Tinubu is conscious of the fact that election of officers and flag bearers will make him loose grip of the party structure as his loyal kitchen cabinet members could lose out.
It is his opinion that continuing with his style of chosing party flag bearers which helped him from the era of Alliance for Democracy (AD) to Action Congress (AC) and later Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) wil be the tonic that can whip all members into a single line under his control. However Tinubu is facing a big challenge as the trio of Muhammadu Buhari, Ibrahim Shekarau and Rochas Okorocha want their interest to be protected which cannot be guaranteed should he (Tinubu) handpick the candidates.
To this end, Tinubu is at a crossroad since he understands that any plans that does not accommodate the interests of the trio would further backfire and is capable of disuniting the members of the party. He has been meeting with party elders but a very crucial meeting with the trio has been fixed for April in London where this issue among others will be finalized.
