Former Super Eagles assistant coach Joe Erico has expressed his disappointed – but not surprise – that there was no Nigerian match officials selected for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
FIFA released the full list of match officials as well as the programme that will help them prepare for the tough task in Brazil in June and July.
Off the 91 officials named by FIFA, 13 were from the CAF region, but no Nigerian referee was included and Erico believes FIFA have good reason.
“I am not surprised that Nigerian referees will not officiate at the World Cup because there are no world class referees in the country,” the ex-Eagles coach told the Daily Independent.
“What we have in this country are incompetent referees not good enough for World Cup. You know the best club does not win league matches in Nigeria because some of the referees are bought over.
He added: “I think this is a challenge to Nigerian referees. What is the essence of officiating in the Nigerian League and CAF tournaments without being considered for the World Cup.”
