With Christmas around the corner, there appears to be an increasing pressure on personal grooming due to mounting invitations to endless end-of-the-year parties, carols, concerts, festivals, weddings, and other social events. The season usually has many women on a shopping spree wanting to be at their best for every single event. Preparing for the ‘party season’ can sometimes be overwhelming especially when you are on a budget. However, as hectic as our preparation may be, let us not forget to pay some attention to what I personally consider the most important beauty accessory – your skin. That expensive dress, costume, jewellery, make-up item cannot replace the beauty of a fresh, flawless and naturally glowing skin.
Along with all the needed fashion essentials, it is important to start early preparations towards ensuring that you look super gorgeous throughout this festive season. Do not wait till the last minute before a party/event hoping a facial will do the magic or an expensive night cream will perform a miracle. Salon treatments and good skin care products do have their gain but will not replace the personal pampering your skin seriously needs. With a few weeks to go, you have got time to give your skin that needed extra attention. With the guidelines provided, you can begin now to improve the appearance of your most valuable asset, your skin.
Watch Your Diet: Proper nutrition plays an important role in the appearance of the skin because the skin is renewed every three to four weeks with certain ingredients found in your blood stream. Considering that there is likely to be an increase in alcoholic and caffeinated beverages during the festive season, a diet watch can also help to detoxify your skin and tone your body. It will also help the eliminatory organs such as the liver and kidneys have some well deserved rest before you put them under pressure from the indulgences of the season. For a healthy body and beautiful skin;
•Avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks like coffee.
•Drink plenty of water to keep the body properly hydrated. Drink a minimum of eight glasses daily.
•Increase your intake of raw fruits and vegetables to provide the body with skin essential enzymes.
•Minimize your sodium (salt) intake to avoid bloating.
•Eat fish especially oily ones which are rich in essential omega-3 fatty acids.
•Eat light and avoid late night meals.
Adhere to a Skin-care Regime: When was the last time you used your cleansing wash? Or that face cream currently decorating your vanity table? There is no way you can elegantly rock a party with a giant pimple on your face or a nasty rash on your back in your strapless designer gown. Remember, the ‘smart phones’ paparazzi always on the look-out for interesting updates. You need to take your beauty regime seriously, the skin does respond to proper and consistent care. Starting from now, follow a proper skin-care regime to make a big difference on your appearance in a few weeks. A good skin-care regime should consist of cleansing, moisturizing and use of sun protection daily and exfoliating, weekly. You can also include weekly use of a face mask to give your skin some extra pamper.
Please note; your skin does not stop at your jaw. When using your facial mask, apply some on your neck and décolleté too. Always apply moisturizer and sun protection to your these areas too.
Use Sun Protection: I always give sun protection a special mention because, the sun’s UV rays remain the number one cause skin damage and premature aging. Sun protection is also an important part of preparing for this festive season because most of our favoured party dresses might have us baring some flesh and you definitely do not want to appear with two or three tones at any event. When you go out in the sun, make sure you apply enough sunscreen to cover all exposed skin with special emphasis to your face, neck, décolletage and hands. Always re-apply sunscreen every two hours, or after sweating or swimming.
Get Enough Sleep: Good sleep is vital for a healthy and beautiful skin as sleeplessness can cause the skin to have a dull complexion, dark circles, lines, and wrinkles and in some cases, rashes and eczema. Getting enough good sleep will not only help the skin repair and renew itself; it will also help reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles on the face.
Start Exercising: Breathing literally oxygenates the skin so it becomes alive and vibrant. Any activity that makes you breathe more deeply will make your skin glow. Start a daily exercise programme to increase blood and oxygen flow to your skin which will give you the much needed radiance during the festivities. Do not wait for a special visit to the gym or sport club. If you do not have any sports equipment, engage in simple but effective exercises like jugging or fast walking which you can do anywhere. Few days to your event, start increasing your exercise time to give you instant glow and help to tone your body.
Get Professional Help: In addition to personal and lifestyle adjustments, you can rejuvenate your skin with a variety of professional beauty treatments available. While nothing replaces a good at-home care for your skin, a professional touch will go a long way to boosting the health and general appearance of your skin. For instance, a professional facial is always more effective than any home treatment because the professional skin-care products that are used have a higher percentage of performance than the regular home use products. However, do not wait to the last minute to schedule a beauty treatment, skin treatments should be done some days or weeks before to ensure your skin calm and glowing for all your special events. Now is the best time book an appointment with a skin expert for the best skin treatment for you. Treatments you should consider include;
•Facials- Helps to cleanse, balance, rehydrate, brighten and firm-up the skin.
•Peels- Designed to deeply exfoliate and rejuvenate the skin. This will brighten your complexion and help erase fine lines.
•Wraps and Rubs- Help to exfoliate and soften the skin, stimulate the circulation, absorb excess oils, make you sweat to pull out toxins from the body and relax your muscles.
•Manicure and Pedicure- pampering and relaxing treatment to soften the hands and feet, and give the nails a perfect polish.
•Massage- Stimulates blood and oxygen supply to the skin cells which helps their renewal process improving complexion and tone.
Relax: Stress has one of the greatest damaging effects on the skin. As the muscles tense when stressed, the skin loses its glow and begins to look worn and tired. This also leads to the formation of lines and wrinkles. As much as possible, avoid situations that put a lot of stress on you. One of the most effective ways to cope with daily stress is to spend some time focusing on your good attributes, your strengths and your beauty.
